Some have suggested.....

/

that I should change this goal to “Adopt a baby daughter from China”. No- I don’t think its the same.

I am approved for a little girl up to three years old. My goal was not to adopt a “baby”. So many people just focus on the children “as young as possible” in international adoption. In fact on the adoption boards people can write AYAP and everyone knows what they are talking about. What about the others? The ones that are too “old”. Are they to be discarded; left behind to grow up in an orphanage or “baby home” because they are over a year old?

I have a son adopted as a toddler. He was waiting in Russia for me because he was “too old” at 2 yrs. He had been passed over by many families. I am filled with happiness and so thankful that he is mine! I believe the Universe has blessed me with him. He truly has enriched and complemented our family.

I just read about a couple that were actually IN China that refused their referral because they felt she was delayed- even though her medicals were normal for an “institutionalized” child. Do people realize REALLY what they are doing when they sign up to “adopt an orphan”. Ah! I hate those words. This is a child we are taling about. Not some commodity to be had for a high price and to be passed over for being just what they are. A child raised from birth in an institution with few hands and resources. How could these children NOT be delayed?

I know there are some good agencies out there who educate their clients. Others don’t. If you are interested in adoption- please please please do your homework. It is NOT a walk in the park. I hope to post a list or reviews of some books about adoption. This is not a fairy tale people. Even in international adoption- these kids have histories.
