Course Overview:This presentation will address the challenges faced by clinicians in diagnosing and treating childhood apraxia of speech. While an overview of diagnostic considerations will be presented, the majority of the presentation will be intervention based, with a wide range of treatment ideas described. A multi-sensory treatment approach based on motor learning principles will be detailed. Extensive videotaped examples of children in treatment will be used to highlight practical speech therapy techniques, clinical decision-making and suggestions for carryover outside of the treatment setting. Day two of this workshop will provide DIRECT clinical observation of sample treatment sessions conducted by David Hammer, with several actual children affected by apraxia of speech via live video feeds to the lecture hall from an adjacent, private room.
Clinical observations will be followed by group discussion with the presenter and processing of observed sample treatment. Extensive handouts will be provided, and suggested therapy resources will be shared. Additional strategies for family involvement will be stressed, with videotaped examples and recommendations provided for how to accomplish this.
