A Dog Day

Yesterday I took advantage of a break in the rain to pick up a few stray toys in the front yard before it started to snow on them. I had left the door slightly open (I tend to lock myself out a lot). While I was bent over I heard some growling and barking. As I looked up I saw the two dogs from across the street bounding toward me. These dogs are NOT nice and are usually confined to a fenced yard where they terrorize the children as they walk to their bus stop. Most kids just run past this house. I let out a little yelp of alarm and the next thing I know Mowgli is in the middle of a twisting mass of fur and dog saliva.

It took me a second to realize that the two dogs decided that they needed to put an end to Mowgli. One had him by the neck the other had his teeth sunk into my dog's back. I screamed several times for the dogs to "Let him go! Leave him!" Of course they didn't listen. I was scared to death that they were going to kill our dog! Without thinking I jump into the fray myself and start kicking the dog that had Mowgli's neck with all my might, yelling "let him go you son's of bitches!" I slipped on the mud and fell to the ground. I scrambled back up to find the owner yelling and trying to drag the dog on Mowgli's back off of him. Mowgli was lying still on the ground but still breathing, I grabbed his collar (which I am convinced saved his life) and drug him to his feet and got him into the house.

As I sat on the floor searching through Mowgli's thick fur for wounds, intermittently crying and swearing there was a soft knock at the door. It was the neighbor apologizing and explaining that he was cleaning out the dog's pen and they must have found a hole in the fence. I said I was fine and asked him to just leave.

I called my husband who thought I was just being a bit hysterical (isn't he an insensitive lout?).

A dog with hundreds of staples and a few drains in his skin and around a thousand dollars later he is singing a different tune.

I have several things going through my mind-

What if this had been my nine pound dog Vito?

What if this had been one of my children? Mowgli is NOT a small dog.

What am I to do? Mowgli was not on a leash, he ended up on the neighbor's property, as was I. Should I ask the neighbor to help with the expenses? Should I call animal control? (I hate to do that. I feel like the animal control in this county is like the SS. I truly HATE them. And it is not like my dog has never been loose before and "menacingly barked" at people (Vito).)

Needless to say Mowgli is a mess and extremely down in the dumps and in PAIN. I'm not sure if I should feel guilty for him getting hurt because of me or thankful that he decided to protect me. A bit of both, I think.

Then...

I think of myself yelling "you son's of bitches" at the dogs and having a little laugh.

Here is a pick of my baby, sans graphic gore but depression palpable.

I am really REALLY disturbed by these events, of course for good reason but I had a little cousin killed by dogs. They weren't mean dogs like these were, they were golden retrievers. If golden retrievers can kill a little boy, aren't these dogs even more capable of the same thing? Am I over reacting? I couldn't bear it if I was the cause of the dogs losing their home or lives but I couldn't bear losing my children either.

McGruff House

Why have I never heard of this? It is a great idea. When I took a self defense class when I worked at the DA's office, the instructor says that you should have a code word for your children to run to a safe area if you are being attacked.

With this program you could show them places in the area with this sign so they would know a safe place to go.

You have my permission to forward this post.

Many of you are familiar of the Masha Allen story.. the young woman who was adopted at age 5 from an orphanage in Russia by a single pedophile named Matthew Mancuso.

He sexually abused her and posted thousands of photos of her on many child pornography sites. She was rescued from his home after 5 years and has a new adoptive family. However she will always be victimized by the widespread distribution of the photos.http://www2.oprah.com/tows/slide/200601/20060117/slide_20060117_284_201.jhtml - interview on Oprahhttp://energycommerce.house.gov/reparchives/108/Hearings/05032006hearing1852/Allen.pdf - Congressional testimonyI just learned that Peter Sotos is publishing a book called "Show Adult" which is already listed for pre-sale on Amazon.com and Barnes& Noble.**Masha has not given permission for her story or photos to be used in this manner**Peter Sotos was the first American convicted of *owning* child pornography when he used images of children in his magazine "Pure". In this new book, he exploits Masha Allen's story, referring to her as a "child porn star" and celebrating the exploitation of Masha Allen by her adoptive father via the Internet. The ISBN is 9781840681482 for the paperback version of the "Show Adult" book which is listed for under $20 on B&N & AmazonYou can find more information about Peter Sotos and his 'work' here. If you wonder.. is this art or pornography, you can view the scans of the "pure" magazine. Links to the scanned pages are at the bottom of the Wikipedia. In the few pages I read, he glorifies the rape of a black woman. It is misogynist, racist writing, celebrating a restrained woman protesting her rape and sodomization. I am at a loss for words.

Thousands of Babies Left in Hospital Limbo

By Svetlana Osadchuk Staff Writer

photoOne of the rejected babies looking out the window at the Pskov hospital.

Seven hours after Kristina Smirnova, 17, gave birth to her son, the doctor came into her room and said she should hand the baby over to the state. "The baby is ill. He will not live more than a week. I think signing rejection papers is the only wise thing for a girl like you to do," the doctor said, Smirnova recalled.

Smirnova had the baby at the Motorshchiki maternity ward in the east Siberian city of Barnaul on the morning of Oct. 31, 2005. She had no identification papers, no relatives, no place to live and no money. She had spent the last year living with her boyfriend, the baby's father, but he broke up with her when he learned that his son was ill.But Smirnova refused to sign the rejection papers, sparking a 2 1/2-month struggle to prevent the boy from joining thousands of babies caught in a hospital limbo.

The babies, usually referred to as otkazniki, live in almost every children's hospital in the country. No accurate figures are kept because the babies themselves do not officially exist. The babies are only counted once they are moved to orphanages -- a process that by law should take no more than four months but in practice can take several years. While they wait, they are often neglected and sometimes abused. Hospital staff commonly advise mothers who are single, very young or struggling financially to give up their babies, even those who are healthy

photoSmirnova holding her son, Vladimir, whom doctors advised her to give up.

"If Beethoven's mother had been in one of our hospitals, they would have told her to give him up because she was from a poor family and ill with tuberculosis," said Igor Beloborodov, head of Maternity and Childhood Protection, a nongovernmental organization.

Mothers of sickly babies often heed the hospital staff's advice, including about 85 percent of those whose children are diagnosed with Down Syndrome, said Sergei Koloskov, head of the Down Syndrome Association. His wife was told to leave their daughter, Vera, at the hospital when she was diagnosed with the genetic disorder. She refused.

Ten years ago, Moscow health officials advised city maternity wards not to discourage new mothers by telling them that they would be unable to care for their babies. But that has not changed what people say privately.Smirnova was released from the Barnaul hospital after a week, but the baby was kept in intensive care. Each time she returned to check up on him, she was urged to sign the rejection papers."Doctors, nurses and even cleaning ladies told me that I was stupid to ask for my baby back," Smirnova said during a recent visit to Moscow to get medical treatment for her 19-month-old son.

Even though she had never seen the baby, she gave him a name -- Vladimir. The boy was the only relative she had in the world, she said. Her mother and grandmother died in her home village of Gordeyevo when she was 14. She tried for a few months to live with her father, who had divorced her mother and lived in another town with a new wife and their children. "I was a burden for them. I came back to my village and stayed with friends," she said. She met Vladimir's father in the neighboring village of Belmesevo, and they fell in love. Smirnova said she thought he was a reward from heaven for the loneliness she had felt after her mother's death. Many young women who give up their babies share similar stories, Beloborodov said. They are from poor families and are in relationships where they sought a substitute for parental love. They often live with landlords who would evict them if they had a baby. In Moscow, many babies are given up by mothers who came to the city from the regions seeking a better life, Beloborodov said.

The procedure to give up a baby is simple, said a spokeswoman for the family, maternity and childhood department of the Health and Social Development Ministry. A married or single mother just needs to write a statement on a blank sheet of paper that she wants to put her child up for adoption for financial reasons or "difficult family circumstances," the spokeswoman said. After the statement is signed, the child usually is placed in the nearest children's hospital until all bureaucratic procedures are completed.

About 460 rejected babies live in hospitals in the Moscow region and 250 live in hospitals in the Sverdlovsk region, according to a presidential administration report on child welfare issues. The internal report dated April 2007, a copy of which was obtained by The Moscow Times, gave no figures for other regions."The development of orphanages is neglected in many regions, so rejected babies are kept in hospitals too long," the report said. "As a result, they are deprived of walks outside and lie in bed for months. They are delayed in their mental and physical growth."In Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Sverdlovsk region, only about 20 of the 90 children living in hospitals are sick, said the city's health department.

Two cases of abuse have made national headlines this year. Yekaterinburg prosecutors opened a criminal investigation in January into a nurse suspected of taping babies' mouths shut to stop them for crying at the city's Infectious Diseases Hospital No. 15. In March, prosecutors in Orekhovo-Zuyevo, a town 85 kilometers east of Moscow, began investigating a hospital where children were tied to their beds with sheets. In both cases, hospital patients photographed the abuse with their cell phones and the pictures were shown on state television. The rejected babies are a burden to the children's hospitals, said Boris Altshuler, who advises ombudsmen Vladimir Lukin on the problem. Most hospitals do not allocate money to feed them or hire nurses to care for them. That means nurses typically visit their rooms three times a day -- to feed them and change their diapers. Some hospitals don't even have diapers, so the babies lie in wet sheets for hours, Altshuler said. Feeding is also a problem. Nurses rarely have time to hold a bottle of milk for each baby, so they put bottles into the babies' mouths and leave them; if a bottle falls out, the baby goes hungry. When mothers visiting their own children in the hospitals try to pick up the babies, they are often told, "Don't touch them. They will then get used to being touched and will cry after you leave," Altshuler said.Since hospitals are closed institutions in Russia, volunteers are not welcome as they are in the West, said Nadezhda Davydova, who volunteers at several Moscow hospitals under a special agreement with administrators. "The administration has no right to let in sympathetic people," she said. Davydova said she, other volunteers and children's rights activists were lobbying the government to place the babies in foster families and get them adopted.

"It is naive to think that the problem is bad nurses all around the country," Davydova said. In a rare exception, a Christian charity is paying for a new hospital ward for 40 rejected babies in the city of Pskov, about 20 kilometers east of the Estonian border. Initiative Pskov, a Protestant-sponsored group, is also covering the salaries of a team of specialists to care for the babies and help place them in families.By law, the babies can be adopted while still in the hospital. But information about them is entered into a national adoption database very slowly and is often incomplete.

Two years ago, prosecutors in the Altai republic fined a social services official for failing file information about a baby who had lived at a hospital for 18 months. Some children never recover from their months in the hospital without someone to walk them, talk with them and hug them, Altshuler said."When the time comes to decide whether to place them in a regular orphanage or one for the mentally disabled, they are at risk of being placed in the second. This means they will never go to a regular school," Altshuler said. Smirnova only got her son, Vladimir, out of the hospital when a friend helped her obtain a passport and rent an apartment. She receives 3,000 rubles per month from the state to care for the boy, who has neurological and heart problems. Doctors still advise her to give him up.Smirnova recently invited another young woman, Nastya, to move into the rented apartment with her. Nastya's sad story mirrors her own. She is expecting her child in August.

A Reminder

There are so many times I feel insulated from the rest of the world living in the small town I do. As I was following the Couey Trial where John Couey has been sentenced to death for kidnapping, raping and burying alive a nine year old girl there was another predator arrested in front of a school in the SAME TOWN as my children's school. Another wake up call to me and other parents that we must always be sure our kids are reminded again and again of what to do to be safe.

A police officer stopped a 2006 GMC van that was driving suspiciously in the area of The School. At the time of his arrest (the suspect) was wearing a red and black children's type marching band uniform. Inside the van deputies discovered stuffed animals, a collection of toys, a variety of photos depicting children in various stages of play and video tapes. One tape proved to be a pornographic movie. (the suspect) is a registered sex offender in a neighboring county but had not registered his current address which may be either 3 miles from me or 30 minutes from me.

The Police stated that the department was unable to provide the District Attorney's office with sufficient evidence due to time constraints to keep (the suspect) incarcerated.

The police added that the investigation will continue as to where (the suspect) is currently living and what his activities have been of late.

After this happened another report came in.

A vehicle appeared to be following some children in the (2 minutes from me) area on March 6. It was described as a "purplish/bluish" van with chipped paint. The male subject driving was described as having a beard. Both the van and the beard match the description of 44 year old registered sex offender (suspect) who was arrested Friday while driving suspiciously in the area of the *** School.
The two boys reportedly ran away from the person and the van because they thought his actions were suspicious.

The Police are asking residents to always be diligent in making sure children are supervised. They have put out a list of reminders for parents.

Teach your children:
To travel or play with a friend, or better yet, a group of friends. When playing, riding their bike or walking to or from school or other destinations the child is more vulnerable when they are alone.

That adults don't usually ask children for directions. If someone stops to ask them directions, they should turn and run away from that person and that car.

If someone is following them, they should go to a place where there are people; to a neighbor's home or into a store. Then ask for help from an adult.

Never go near a car with someone sitting in it and never go into a car without permission from a parent. They should know in whose car they are allowed to ride. Warn them that someone may try to lure them to their car by saying you said it was OK to pick them up. Tell them never to obey those, or any instructions from a person they don't know.

If an adult asks them to keep a secret, they need to tell you about it.

Never take offerings of gifts or money from someone in a car or that they don't know.

Never let anyone take their picture who they don't know.

To yell “HELP”, not just to scream.

As Parents, You Should:

Know where your children are at all times; never leave them unattended and never leave them sitting in a car.

Be involved in their outdoor activities.

When someone shows your child a great deal of attention, find out why.

Listen to your child when they tell you they don't want to be with someone or go somewhere. There may be a reason you should know about.

Do not buy items that have your child's name on them such as jackets, hats, or t-shirts. An abductor could start up a friendly conversation with your child after reading their name.

And it bears repeating. Tell your child to NEVER, EVER get into a car of a person they don't know. Once the child is in the car their chances of survival from a child abduction drop dramatically.

Finally, if you see a suspicious person or vehicle in your area, get the best description you can, including the license number if possible, and call the sheriff's office.

Financial Literacy For Our Children

There are many things that parents focus on teaching their children. Is financial literacy one of the subjects that you have thought of? I have thought of it but I assumed my children would be too young to understand. Now I don't think I should wait. If we are going to change the way money controls our world, we must change the way it controls our families.

Reading a blog from a mother who used to be in marketing (The Not Quite Crunch Parent), she stated that the focus is going to the younger and younger children. The corporations of the world are marketing toward preschoolers, toddlers and young children, this is nothing new. What IS fairly new is that they actually have an acronym for it KGOY (kids getting older younger). There are more adult oriented products (technology=$$$$$) toward our children.

Then I ready this article from Michelle Singletary of the Washington Post. An excerpt:

"Some of the most disturbing interviews in the movie came from two
mothers, Janne O'Donnell and Trisha Johnson. Both women lost children --
college
students -- who committed suicide largely because of credit card
debts.

O'Donnell's son had amassed a debt of $12,000 on 10 credit
cards. Johnson's
daughter was a freshman when she spread her credit card
bills on her bed and
then hanged herself. She owed $2,500. You can't watch
these women tell their
story and not be outraged."

  • Teaching Children Money Habits For Life

  • They are a place to start.

After reading that article, I am starting today.

    The Factories of Lost Children

"..as long as we don't question the source of the inexpensive clothing we wear, as long as we don't wonder about the children in those third world factories who make the inexpensive toys we buy for our own children, those fires will occur and young girls and boys will continue to die. They won't die because of natural catastrophes like monsoons and earthquakes; they will die because it has become our national habit to outsource, and these days we outsource our tragedies, too. "

"This is a great country, and it wasn't made so by angry people. We have a sacred duty to bequeath it to our grandchildren in better shape than however we found it. We have a long way to go and we're not getting any younger. Dante said that the hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who in time of crisis remain neutral, so I have spoken my piece, and thank you, dear reader. It's a beautiful world, rain or shine, and there is more to life than winning." -Garrison Keillor

Re: Talking to my kids about the Amish School Shooting

I am a mother of three amazing, wonderful, curious, innocent children. I want them to stay that way. You know that as a family- we do not have a TV. I don't feel that my children need to be constantly bombarded with what is in the media today. The last few days are a glaring example.

Yet- I cannot bury my head in the sand. I cannot let them be ignorant of how to stay safe. I cannot take the chance of them hearing about this horrific incident from anyone else but me.

Here are just a few of the sites I found that are supposed to help us with talking to our kids about what happened in Pennsylvania and the war in Iraq- about violence in general. It is imperative that we do so. We can no longer think that moving to the country, putting them in a small school, anything... can shield them from a POSSIBLE harm.

I broached the subject with them this morning. I generalized the options that could be taken if a "bad stranger" came into their schoolroom. It is not enough. I will be sitting down with them and speak VERY CLEARLY.

I took a self defense class when I worked at the District Attorney's Office. The instructor said that children are often hurt when their parents are RIGHT BY THEIR SIDE. The children don't want to leave their parents. He said that there should be a "code word" given to the children that means RUN away and hide or find a policeman or store clerk while the parent deals with the mugger, car jacker etc. So often kids are hurt b/c they don't know how to get AWAY. I can say this is true. Like I said- I worked at the District Attorney's office.

Don't ever think that YOU will be able to protect your children totally. They need to be prepared, not scared to death but prepared. Homeschooling is a wonderful option for education but people break into homes too. Take the time to talk to your kids. They are just as scared as you are about this- they need you.
